She Makes Me Wanna: Hustle Harder

September 22, 2011 |  by DaVida  |  She Makes Me Wanna, That's My Girl, The Grind, Uncategorized  |  2 Comments

Abraham Lincoln said, “Things may come to those who wait, but only those things left by those who hustle.” Mr. Lincoln must have somehow known of Naomi Galatas. I met Naomi at last year’s New Orleans Film Fest. We have a mutual friend, Fatima, and the three of us went to go see the shorts at the festival and I instantly liked her. She had a spunky spirit and knew movies like I do-watching all the intricate details no one else cares about. After we went to have beignets and talked a bit. Naomi shared that she’d worked on a show that was in town and enjoyed it and wanted to explore working in film and tv more. She also shared how much she loved music. Naomi felt that New Orleans had such great underground hip-hop talent and she somehow wanted to help spread the word about the talent she saw to the world. As I listened I thought FINALLY someone who sees it like I do. BUT I wasn’t convinced yet if she was truly ambitious or if she was just a great talker (after all it was our first meeting and I can get very excited about new people only to find they weren’t quite what I thought). Naomi and I promised to stay in touch and parted ways at the end of the night (after watch Dee-1 perform AND catching a great film starring Anthony Mackie who spoke at the screening! WHAT A FAB DAY!). Anyway, several weeks later, my job was looking for an assistant in set containment. This job would not be glamourous but would be a way to be on set and get a foot in the door. I debated for a while about telling Naomi. True, she said she was down to work in whatever capacity and she had a brother in Baton Rouge but still I wasn’t sure it was for her-I didn’t want her to think I thought she was only capable of set containment – people can be funny that way. I decided to just let her know and she could decide what she’d like to do. She was excited about the opportunity and jumped on it. She met the boss on a Sunday and that Monday my superior had only awesome things to say. Naomi had secured the job on her own. Once she started work, she knew set containment wasn’t her thing but she showed up and went above and beyond on the daily. But she’s a hustler, she introduced herself to the PR director, told her the vision she held and basically went after what she wanted. I was in awe! Naomi always says I got her a job-I did no such thing. I just gave her info and she created her own lane. That’s what hustlers do!

After the job, it was time to think of what’s next. Naomi invited me to go swimming at her friend’s and while we were there she mentioned starting a website. Again, she had a great idea but I was leary because folk talk a lot but don’t always back it up. By the end of that week, Naomi not only had the site set up but had quite a few followers and interest! A few weeks after that, we both applied for a job as assistant to the Second Unit Director on GI Joe 2. I can count on one hand how many interviews I’ve gone on and not gotten the job. This is job was one of the two!!! Naomi had captured the position! (LOL my ego didn’t like that but that’s another post for another day lol.) I’m so beyond proud of this girl and she reminds me to stay on my hustle, not just when it feels good and things are going my way but ALL THE TIME! Now her peers are even taking note of her hustle as she’s been nominated for a NOLA HIP HOP AWARD, category you ask? Hustler of the Year! So again you can wait for what’s coming but know that Naomi’s hustle is leaving LITTLE behind! Read her story for yourself…

Guest Blog: The Hunt Is On…

August 30, 2011 |  by DaVida  |  Uncategorized  |  No Comments

Ladies and gentleman, I’m pleased to present JAY SKILLZ. This post is pretty awesome…however, I will not be fielding inquiries (read on and you shall see what I mean!).

COUGAR SEASON by Jay Skillz Unfamiliar blogging territory I’m in here. So to the unfamiliar I’d like to introduce myself. I go by name of “The Instant Classic” DJ Jay Skillz. I spin records, I write blogs, I live life. It just so happens that the lovely Miss Davida Chanel offered me an opportunity to write a blog for her blog. So I decided to jump all over that. I was going to get kinda deep…..but I decided to post that on my blog.

As most of you know the weather is about to change and people are gonna be scrambling for a body to keep warm with. This is also known as cuffing season. I’m definitely not a fan of that. Instead I’m going to spend the cold month’s ahead hunting. This particular type of hunting though doesn’t involve guns or woods. No, no, no my friends. This Winter I’m going Cougar Hunting. Now for the uninformed our friends over at urbandictionary.com defines a cougar as the following:

An attractive woman in her 30′s or 40′s who is on the hunt once again. She may be found in the usual hunting grounds: nightclubs, bars, beaches, etc. She will not play the usual B.S. games that women in their early twenties participate in. End state, she will be going for the kill, just like you.

Some of you might need to re-read that. As I enter my 25th year it occurs to me that a cougar is exactly what I need in my life. A older woman, not about games, not looking for a relationship. Just sex, sex, sex and more sex. I don’t see a downside to this but I’m sure somebody will. At 25 this is the closest thing I’m looking at relationship wise. As a youngin (heh) I didn’t get the appeal of being with an older woman. As I matured and aged into the fine wine that I am now. (ha) I see the greatness of this situation.

How can you beat being with a older woman with bedroom experience. She only wants you for your package and your stamina then you can get the f**k when ya’ll finish? Sign me up please. Bedding a cougar also has advantages for your next relationship. Cougars basically just want to get off so she’s going to show you what it takes to take a woman to that place. Of course every woman is different and gets off on different things. However there are some things that work across the board so why not get hands on training? It’s almost like having a residency before becoming a doctor.

I’m a busy guy, not fake busy either. A cougar fits into my life right now like a hand in a glove or my pen……never mind. Let’s not get too vulgar. Being with an older woman seems like it can be quite an experience and I definitely wanna experience it soon. So I’m gonna start hanging out at the older crowds spots. So if you see me at DISHonHayne, Bridge Lounge or even 7140 understand that I’m looking for somebodys mother, aunt and hell with the way society is these days maybe even grandmoms.

I’m Cougar Hunting and I love it man. I like this blogging for other people thing too so if allowed I might just be back. Like I said my name is Jay Skillz. 3 drinks, 2 fingers, 1 love. I Got A Story To Tell…

So…1997 was like this crazyyyyy year for me. It started as the spring semester of my junior year in college. At the beginning of the year I was coming off being on the court, pledging and completing all my required coursework to become a senior! By the end of the year I was overwhelmed because life had changed sooooo quick.I was coming off a Ms. SU loss, seeing the sorority was REAL work and facing about to graduate and going into the real world. One minute, everything was chill and in the next, I was faced with all the weight of starting a new “life”. I mean college had been cool but I had to go into the REAL world? I was so nervous. There was one cd that got me through that year-LIFE AFTER DEATH. Whenever I got down, I remember Biggie’s story-I mean talk about a year going from amazing to tragic!!! Here I was tripping over starting a new phase in life while this man was dead as the greatest phase of his life was just beginning. No comparison right? So today I found the CD!!!! The timing couldn’t be more perfect! I’m starting a new phase in life and was tripping again. What if it doesn’t work? What if this? What about that? And the LIFE AFTER DEATH scenario still applied…This is my time to shine! How can I be so sure?!?! Because I’ve been here before…

This time I’m ready to tell all the stories I’ve got to share…so today’s motivational Monday song is none other that I GOT A STORY TO TELL…ENJOY!!!

Astrologers and persons such as myself with an interest in astrology are prepping for Mercury retrograde which starts tomorrow and goes thru April 23. This period is known to cause glitches in communication. My old boss was very cautious during retrogrades and since I worked with him, I’m always aware of when this period begins. Because of his apprehension, this has become a time that causes me great concern. This time, I’ve decided to take a page from one of my fave bloggers. Here’s what Astrogrrl had to say:

Following the standard with any retrograde planet, this Mercury retrograde period is a time for the prefix “re” — reflect, rethink, re-plan, review, retool, reorganize, redefine, re-examine, rewrite, reread, repair. So reassess, as necessary and as much as you want, but avoid starting new projects, signing any contracts, or entering into any major agreements or commitments. It’s easy to overlook details or neglect to include information pertinent to the terms. A change of mind is also common. If you must enter into an agreement during the retrograde period, it is important to re-read all fine print, have another set of eyes go over it, and get all your questions answered before completing the transaction.

So this rip, instead of being all woe is me during the Mercury Rx, I’m going to embrace it and RE…some stuff  starting with REflecting/REviewing my current state. It is so so easy for me to get caught up in what’s not happening but I’ve decided to take this period as a time to REaccess what is going as planned. During this time I’m going to REread the latest outline draft of my short film and REwrite to give the story justice. I want to REdefine some outdated thoughts I’ve been holding on to.

In light of all that can be REdone during this time, I’m pretty excited for this Mercury Rx!!!

I love this guy! He is the truth. From the first time Jim Vruggink told me about him on the drive from Indianapolis to West Lafayette during my initial interview at Purdue….Congrats and may the accolades and success continue to come his way!

At 11:11:11 today I’m going to make a wish, well several wishes-seems like there should be some luck surrounding that time on today 11.11 :) But this will not be some random set of wishes that I let blow in the wind. This set of wishes will be accompanied by some strong work ethic and allowing them to come into my life. I’m EXCITED! So what will you wish for today?

The Unauthorized Version of My Friend Alicia’s recent engagement (from MY perspective)…

A few years ago, I heard about this book, “Calling In the One”.

Calling In The One

It was a 7 week book that said when you were done, you’d be able to attract the love you desire into your life. I contacted 10 of my most attractive, ambitious, single girlfriends to read the book with me (its one of those where there are activities and it is recommended to do in a group. It’s easy to start thinking “this is just me” when you are single, but my girls were equally interested in finding love and were not having good results. I figured best case scenario, we’d all fall in love and get married in the next few years. Worse case, we’d get to talk and connect with one another every week and at least talk about love. Win-Win. About 6 of my girls had a schedule that worked so we embarked on reading this book and committing to do the work. Each week we’d have a conference call (Sundays) and we’d check in throughout via a blog.

One of these friends was my girl Alicia.

Alicia and I At Essence

Alicia was a year older than me and we met at college. She did everything I wanted to do – only a year before so I always knew who she was although I’m sure she did not know me until way later. As a freshmen, I saw her actively helping student during registration and signing people up for SGA. Her lovely smile and inviting spirit made me sign up. The next year, I saw her stepping with my sorority of choice (that hadn’t yet chosen me lol!) during a Greek show. She was someone I admired from a far and after I pledged, we became good friends. When I graduated, she was my first roommate as we lived together for six months or so while she was wrapping up her degree. Over the next few years, we both moved around the country (random places for Louisiana girls as she lived in Albuquerque and I in West Lafayette, Indiana) but we talked ALL THE TIME and most of our conversations were just full of laughter (Me: Alicia girl…laugh; Alicia: Hahhhhhhaaaaaaaa; Me: Haaahhhhhhaaaa). We’d always discuss the desire to try something new and different so of course when I heard about the book, I had to invite her to participate. And she did.

The book group went well. We all seemed to enjoy the book and support each other when the activities got difficult (some of the work was HARD CORE!). At the end of the book, we all set goals that sounded pretty similar but I remember Alicia’s goal was to be open to love (heehee, she was pretty rigid before the book in how things had to be but I digress). So time passed and not one of us in the group got engaged, let alone went on a date. My attitude toward love turned sour. I remember on a visit to see Alicia I told her that my new intention was F LOVE bc LOVE didn’t LOVE ME! She set there and remained solid in her belief that she would be open to love. Then life started happening. I got busy trying to re-establish myself at home. Alicia got a new job and did something the book highly recommended. She got a hobby. She became a runner doing marathons and races all over the place. And she started to date, well be open to date. That’s when our phone conversations became more sparse-it can be hard to keep in touch when you are busy but we’d do an email here and facebook there. Then it happened. She met the guy who seemed to be the one. It was. And last night, he PROPOSED!!!!

The Happy Couple

I’m so happy for her and her fiance. Her engagement is such a symbol to me that if you earnestly ask, and truly believe it will be given, it shall manifest! She got the man she desired (and by the way, this guy is a pretty lucky guy because she is an AMAZING woman!) and I couldn’t be happier. I have planted a lot of seeds lately that I know in my heart will come to pass. Seeing Alicia’s love blossom into an engagement reminds me that my harvest shall come soon!

CONGRATS ALICIA AND KENNY!!!

FROM AOL…(Sept. 7) — Cockroaches, the creepy critters reviled for invading kitchens the country over, might be modern medicine’s best option for fending off dangerous, drug-resistant bacterial infections.
