She Makes Me Wanna: Hustle Harder

September 22, 2011 |  by DaVida  |  She Makes Me Wanna, That's My Girl, The Grind, Uncategorized  |  2 Comments

Abraham Lincoln said, “Things may come to those who wait, but only those things left by those who hustle.” Mr. Lincoln must have somehow known of Naomi Galatas. I met Naomi at last year’s New Orleans Film Fest. We have a mutual friend, Fatima, and the three of us went to go see the shorts at the festival and I instantly liked her. She had a spunky spirit and knew movies like I do-watching all the intricate details no one else cares about. After we went to have beignets and talked a bit. Naomi shared that she’d worked on a show that was in town and enjoyed it and wanted to explore working in film and tv more. She also shared how much she loved music. Naomi felt that New Orleans had such great underground hip-hop talent and she somehow wanted to help spread the word about the talent she saw to the world. As I listened I thought FINALLY someone who sees it like I do. BUT I wasn’t convinced yet if she was truly ambitious or if she was just a great talker (after all it was our first meeting and I can get very excited about new people only to find they weren’t quite what I thought). Naomi and I promised to stay in touch and parted ways at the end of the night (after watch Dee-1 perform AND catching a great film starring Anthony Mackie who spoke at the screening! WHAT A FAB DAY!). Anyway, several weeks later, my job was looking for an assistant in set containment. This job would not be glamourous but would be a way to be on set and get a foot in the door. I debated for a while about telling Naomi. True, she said she was down to work in whatever capacity and she had a brother in Baton Rouge but still I wasn’t sure it was for her-I didn’t want her to think I thought she was only capable of set containment – people can be funny that way. I decided to just let her know and she could decide what she’d like to do. She was excited about the opportunity and jumped on it. She met the boss on a Sunday and that Monday my superior had only awesome things to say. Naomi had secured the job on her own. Once she started work, she knew set containment wasn’t her thing but she showed up and went above and beyond on the daily. But she’s a hustler, she introduced herself to the PR director, told her the vision she held and basically went after what she wanted. I was in awe! Naomi always says I got her a job-I did no such thing. I just gave her info and she created her own lane. That’s what hustlers do!

After the job, it was time to think of what’s next. Naomi invited me to go swimming at her friend’s and while we were there she mentioned starting a website. Again, she had a great idea but I was leary because folk talk a lot but don’t always back it up. By the end of that week, Naomi not only had the site set up but had quite a few followers and interest! A few weeks after that, we both applied for a job as assistant to the Second Unit Director on GI Joe 2. I can count on one hand how many interviews I’ve gone on and not gotten the job. This is job was one of the two!!! Naomi had captured the position! (LOL my ego didn’t like that but that’s another post for another day lol.) I’m so beyond proud of this girl and she reminds me to stay on my hustle, not just when it feels good and things are going my way but ALL THE TIME! Now her peers are even taking note of her hustle as she’s been nominated for a NOLA HIP HOP AWARD, category you ask? Hustler of the Year! So again you can wait for what’s coming but know that Naomi’s hustle is leaving LITTLE behind! Read her story for yourself…

She Makes Me Wanna-Be A Team Player

August 25, 2011 |  by DaVida  |  She Makes Me Wanna, So Grateful  |  No Comments

I’m a very helpful person…when I feel like it. Most of the time I don’t. It isn’t that I don’t enjoy helping people and how good that makes me feel, it is just that sometimes I think folks’ requests are to me a sign of laziness. Like when people ask me things I can google I feel like why didn’t they just consult the site instead of me?!?! Other times, people ask me for help in areas I don’t feel necessarily comfortable helping out in-namely my job. I know that someone helped me get my first Hollywood gig that paved the way for what has become my career BUT when she helped I was ready. AND I worked my behind off to be a good reflection on her recommendation. Often times people will ask me for help and don’t even have a prepared resume. I used to feel ok turning people down flat when they asked me-I told myself it’d make them stronger if they have to fight for it. That’s not true and I guess deep down I always knew it. Then a strange thing happened. I met a great young lady named Teniesha. At the time, I was in a position to help her YET she didn’t need any help. Like me, she had her stuff together. Then the winter turned to spring and spring turned to summer and by the spring of the following year, it was I who needed help. Luckily when I called upon Teniesha, she didn’t flinch. She was on hand to assist in any way possible. As I peeped her a bit more, I found she was like that for every one. She gets that helping others be successful is a hands on activity. She doesn’t do it from a distance like I was-she puts herself out there to assist others. Teniesha is the epitome of an open heart and gives so much to enrich the lives of htose around her. That is an admirable trait and one of the many things I admire about this young lady. Here’s her story…

She’s a B&*#H…

My name is DaVida Chanel and I’m a bitch. And I’m ok with that. And today I celebrate ALL that I am-not just the nice, cute stuff but that bitch too. The bitch gets things done. She’s quick to act and moves from the gut. She wishes no harm to others but doesn’t anything or anyone get in the way of her goals. She is no nonsense and is money/wealth motivated. She attacks her workouts and is extremely anal about what she eats. Direct and to the point, none of that wishy-washy stuff. And when I’m in positions like I am now, where I have to will and make things happen, I call in my bitch side. So if you see me on the street and something seems a bit different, don’t sweat it, you’re just meeting my inner bitch…

She Makes Me Wanna – Do It My Way

June 9, 2011 |  by DaVida  |  She Makes Me Wanna, That's My Girl  |  No Comments

For the majority of my life I’ve been trying to be something else. I always felt different so I tried my best to play it cool and be “normal”. I have often found myself trying to assimilate to what I perceived was expected. That idea worked for a while…actually it never really worked but I made do. But as it always does that small voice inside of me kept nagging at me to do things my way…and my way can be a little left of center. I’ve met quite a few “left chicks” like myself. We always vibe and connect because we are one in the same-focused on living our lives by our rules and allowing others to do the same. Earlier this year, I met FRESH JOHNSON at a house party and that “left chick” connection was there from the start. FRESH is the type of girl that multi-tasks. She has a successful career as a radio personality but doesn’t let that limit her from following her many other dreams and desires. Her artistic and creative side shines through-her sense of style is ultra on trend and her event planning business is successful because she infuses her FRESHness in all she does. And her networking skills are quite impressive! Most of all, FRESH encourages others NOT to do it her way but to find and follow their own course. For those and many other reasons, FRESH JOHNSON makes me wanna do it my way! Read on to get to know Fresh for yourself and tune into her show on 102.9FM on Saturday nights starting at 7!

She Makes Me Wanna-Do Me!

February 3, 2011 |  by DaVida  |  She Makes Me Wanna, That's My Girl  |  9 Comments

One of my biggest goals of 2010 was to attract more balanced friendships. Don’t get me wrong, I have quite a bit of friends and I am extremely grateful that each of them are in my life. The thing was none of those friends were in Louisiana! I had moved back home and I wanted to be clear about the new associations I wanted in my life. And while I have a lot of friends that have stood the test of time, I have had many people come and go over the years that didn’t pan out to be such great friends. Most of the time, I felt like I was there for them but couldn’t really count on getting that back in return. I don’t blame them because I believe we attract at the level we are on-and in the past I sought out friendships with people who seemingly had some quality I desired. Those relationships never lasted and in December 2009, I prayed that the people who came into my life would be relationships that were more balanced, nurturing and supportive. My prayers were answered as my friendship and professional relationship with Robinicole evolved.

I’ve known Robiniciole (better known to me as Ro) since college. We both went to Southern but I don’t think we ever officially met. After I graduated, our mutual friend Heather forwarded an inspirational email that Ro had written and I had to meet this girl. Her words moved me to tears so I emailed her and our pen pal friendship began. At the time I was in Los Angeles and she was in Atlanta and neither of us had any idea we’d be back in Louisiana anytime soon. As fate would have it, we both relocated to New Orleans (her hometown) in 2009. We were cool and hung out a bit in ’09 but in ’10 our friendship naturally and effortlessly evolved into exactly what I sought. Like me, Ro’s goals are not quite the norm and she goes after it with such vitality it is exciting to witness! She speaks the things she wants in her life into existence-I’ve seen her say many things and months later they come to pass and she forget she had even said it! And unlike my faux friendships of the past, Ro stands 1000 percent behind me and my dreams. She prays with me and for me and that is the best anyone can ever ask for in a friend! And of all the things she makes me want to do, Robinicole makes me want to do me no matter what! She believes we are all unique with gifts and talents that only we are able to carry out. She says no one came into the world to do what DaVida Chanel can and I believe her :)

NAME: ROBINICOLE

AGE: 33

HOMETOWN: NEW ORLEANS

CURRENT CITY OF RESIDENCE: NEW ORLEANS

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: COLLEGE GRAD AND STUDENT OF LIFE

OCCUPATION: EntrepreNEAUXer, BOSS, Visionary

AS A CHILD WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP: When I was a child I wanted to be a choreographer. I was in dancing for 16 years so I just thought that I would make a natural progression into dance as I got older but it didn’t stick. I also wanted to be a philanthropist.  These two goals haven’t changed. I want to own a dance studio but I won’t be teaching there. I also WILL become a ‘silent’ philanthropist.

DO YOU LOVE WHAT YOU DO: I love to live purposefully. I truly love to mentor, share wisdom and receive it and to make a difference.

HOW DID YOU BEGIN YOUR CAREER: I began my career as an entrepreneur at age 11. I remember telling my mom that people really liked Rice Krispies treats and that they were very easy and cheap to make. So I asked her if she would front me the money to get started and I would turn a profit quickly. She bought the cereal and the marshmallows and the hustle began. By the time the morning bell rang, I was sold out!  By 13, I was selling AVON and was working in the summer! I have never been lazy. I always knew that I was a leader. I wrote my first poem in the 8th grade and was also published. I also made my first fashion magazine in the 7th grade and I got an A! I have always been this girl! In 12th grade I won “Wittiest” and my Sr. fortune read that I would have the ROBINICOLE SHOW!

She Makes Me Wanna-Do It From My Heart

November 3, 2010 |  by DaVida  |  She Makes Me Wanna, That's My Girl  |  3 Comments

I have met a ton of folk in my life that do things for show-hee hee, after all I can definitely be of those people (ummmm, I do tend to share the majority of my life online for the world to see!). People have different reasons to do it for the show (mine are numerous like to build my brand, state my opinions… I digress), but I don’t meet many people that simply do things from the heart. My friend and sorority line sisters, Christina Hill is one of those people.

When I first met her, I quickly labeled Christina as a “do-gooder”. In college, I was a bit of a rebel and I thought girls like Christina were prudes (funny how things like going to class could get you labeled by me! I was such a pre-judger). When we both pledged our sorority, I grew to appreciate that “good” quality in Christina. I found that she was a fun girl, but more importantly, she was someone who did what they said-she had integrity and that was not “good” but a GREAT thing. There were times when other people could not fully live up to their promises, but Christina was there to fill in the gaps-regardless if that filling in would bring her any recognition. Once we graduated, she was instrumental in making sure sorors stayed in touch. She developed web groups, organized reunions and spearheaded groups, not for the show but to ensure that things got done when no one else was interested in the behind the scenes work. (Additionally, she is a forward thinker so she would think of things first. Instead of waiting on others, she’d just get it done.) Years later, we both ended up in L.A. and Christina was always there when I needed her-like the time she made me a family hero and got me and my people into Disneyland! Our time in L.A. showed that she was indeed a fun girl and we got many chances to let our hair down! I came to find what I dubbed as do-gooder was incorrect, Christina is loyal. Her word is her bond and I’ve grown to love her because now that I’m more mature, I see she simply does things that she’s passionate about and she gives it her all.

Chrissy and her Dad

This summer, she sent an email asking her friends to pray for her as she was going to undergo surgery. I’m not sure of all the details but her father needed a kidney and she elected to give him hers. That is so Christina-I’d seen her give and give so much of herself to the sorority and sorors, but here she was literally giving a vital piece of herself to her father. If you ever talk to her, it’s clear to see she’s a Daddy’s girl who loves that man, but I was so impressed with her selfless decision to undergo the surgery to make him more comfortable. The way Christina lives her life challenges me to be more honest with myself about the reasons I do things. Although I still love the showy aspects of my personality, I am more concerned with my intentions. As I continue to grow and evolve on the journey of DaVida, I know that I want to do more things simply from my heart! That’s exactly what this dynamic woman makes me want to do!

She Makes Me Wanna …

NAME: Christina Hill

AGE: 33

HOMETOWN: Thibodaux, LA

CURRENT CITY OF RESIDENCE: North Hollywood, CA

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: BS, Civil Engineering – Southern University; MBA – Freeman School of Business (Tulane University)

OCCUPATION: Sr. Business Analyst, Disney and ESPN Media Networks

AS A CHILD WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP: A lawyer-actor-dancer-model (Hey, I had an active imagination!)

DO YOU LOVE WHAT YOU DO: I love that my job has provided me with great opportunities to travel, meet wonderful people, and enjoy top-notch events. It’s great to work for such globally-recognized brands as Disney and ESPN. One of the greatest perks of my job is that I can move and grow in different roles, departments, and regions of the country without leaving the Walt Disney Company. So, what I really love is figuring out what’s next!

HOW DID YOU BEGIN YOUR CAREER: I began Career #2 with an internship at ESPN in Connecticut during Business School. After graduation, I opted to remain local and take a job with the now-defunct UPN affiliate station in New Orleans. Sadly, little more than a month after I started, Hurricane Katrina devastated the region and I found myself without a home and uncertain about my job. Fortunately, because I built solid relationships during my internship, my friends at ESPN called with a job opportunity in Los Angeles with Disney and ESPN Media Networks. I interviewed; got the job; and, now, three positions and five years later, I’m still enthusiastic about my career aspirations with the company.

ARE YOU LIVING THE LIFE YOU DREAMED OF: Not yet, but that’s because I’ve got BIG dreams! But, life is not about the destination, it’s about the journey. J

WHO IS YOUR FEMALE INSPIRATION: My mother, grandmother, and sister…and, of course, Oprah Winfrey. Right! Isn’t she everyone’s female inspiration? Seriously, though, there are countless women—some that I’ve met and known for years and others that I’ve merely read or heard about—who inspire me. I am truly inspired by anyone who is following her dreams and living her BEST life, now!

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN: I find spending time with my family and friends to be the most fun.  Sometimes, it’s as simple as taking a walk with my sister and mother. Other times, it may be traveling out of the country with my closest sister-friends. Whatever the activity, it’s usually more fun with the people I love.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER WOMEN IN PURSUIT OF THEIR DREAM: First, define, for yourself, what success looks like. Then, whatever your dream, get to work making it a reality! I don’t care how “pie in the sky” it may sound to others, do not let anyone—not even your parents or children—deter you from your dream. Along the way, surround yourself with positive people who motive and inspire you.  And, if you are not an expert in a particular area, don’t give up—find someone who IS an expert in that area. There will be bumps in the road and hills to climb. But, it’s not worth having, if it’s not worth working for. I truly believe that GOD can dream a bigger dream than we can. So, in the words of Joel Osteen, “If you do the natural; God will do the SUPERNATURAL! If you do the ordinary, God will do the EXTRAORDINARY!” Stay positive. Stay focused. Give thanks. And, always give back.

INSPIRATIONAL QUOTES OR MOTTO:

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. – Matthew 6:33

Regret for the things we did can be tempered by time; it is regret for the things we did not do that is inconsolable. – Sydney J. Harris

Never confuse motion with action. – Benjamin Franklin

She Makes Me Wanna – Pursue My Passion

I’m a firm believer that you can make friends online. I’ve found Twitter to be instrumental in helping me meet great, like minded people in New Orleans and one of my most inspiring connections is with Holly Hobbs. Our “introduction” proves my theory on how social networking sites help to foster friendships. I found through Twitter that we have a ton in common – we both like Mojo’s Coffee on Magazine, are into supporting local artists and most importantly, we both have a HUGE crush on Harry Connick, Jr. and frequently say “fabulousness”!!!!

After initially meeting Holly on Twitter, I’ve found her to be highly intelligent and extremely passionate about using her talents to help make stronger communities. Like me, she’s an artist. Unlike me, she’s not a frustrated one trying to figure out how to let her talent be used. It seems as though this isn’t a problem for Holly because she appears to let her passion guide her. Confucius said, “Chose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Well while Holly works extremely hard, it seems as though she’s chosen great places to focus her energy and efforts. With completed documentaries under her belt, she currently works as managing director of the Patios film festival and as co-director of HipHop for Hope. Her passion is contagious and inspires me to really go after the deepest desires of my heart! Read more to see why Holly Hobbs makes me wanna pursue my passion!

NAME: Holly Hobbs
AGE: 31 (aaaa, do I have to put that?LOL!)
HOMETOWN: Columbia, Missouri
CURRENT CITY OF RESIDENCE: New Orleans, Louisiana

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: BA from University of Wisconsin (Gender Studies, African Studies), MA from Indiana University (Ethnomusicology), PhD coursework at University of Missouri (Folklore), finishing proposal to finish PhD at Tulane right now (Ethnomusicology).

OCCUPATION: Hmm. The general term for my field is “cultural development,” using the arts as a resource for community and economic development. And technically by training I’m an ethnomusicologist—the best term for that would be “public sector ethnomusicologist.” But I do film, and I’m a musician, and I’m the managing director of the Patois film festival here and co-direct the nonprofit Hiphop for Hope.

AS A CHILD WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP: a zoologist!

DO YOU LOVE WHAT YOU DO: I love doing a thousand things and being involved in things I’m most passionate about, so yes, I do.

HOW DID YOU BEGIN YOUR CAREER: School was always the best of both worlds for me—graduate school provided a creative environment, time to write and create, money to travel and research, etc. So much of my career has been in graduate school. But I started my music career by playing jazz in piano bars.

ARE YOU LIVING THE LIFE YOU DREAMED OF: Not quite yet but I’m on my way!

WHO IS YOUR FEMALE INSPIRATION: There are so so many, and they cross the board from political figures to writers and musicians. I love Susan Rice, the US Ambassador to the UN recently appointed by Obama. I love Lucinda Williams—I feel like she writes for me. I’m always in awe of Zora Neale Hurston’s life and work, and the work Alice Walker did to recover it. I love Dorothy Parker in all her fabulousness. Toni Morrison does it for me. So does Arundhati Roy. Wangari Maathai, who recently won the Nobel. There was a New York Times interview with Chan Marshall not too long ago where she talked about Mary J. Blige as her inspiration, and I agreed with so much of what she said. And, as always, my mom.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN: I’ve been so busy/stressed/etc since I moved to New Orleans that I haven’t done as much of what I love as I should. Playing & writing music is #1 for me. Other than that, I love my group of girls here. I love walks in Audubon. Coffee already made when I get up in the morning. A good book and a sunny day.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR OTHER WOMEN IN PURSUIT OF THEIR DREAM: Don’t ever give up!

She Makes Me Wanna – Be a Mom (Eventually!)

October 26, 2009 |  by DaVida  |  She Makes Me Wanna, That's My Girl  |  5 Comments
I don’t talk much about motherhood. I know it is an amazing thing but its never been at the top of my priority list. I pride myself in being a bit of a gypsy, free spirit girl (my motto, I need to be able to fit my life into my car just in case I have to move around really quickly!). Kenya was one of those people I saw as the same way. In college she was super “dope” – she had an original style of dress and she was genuinely a sweet girl. Something about her didn’t translate Baton Rouge (not that anything is wrong about BTR natives, she just seemed more worldly). Although we never discussed her future plans I just assumed she’d become some world traveler who lived a unique, non traditional life. Well even though we haven’t lived in the same place in forever, Kenya and I keep in touch often and she’s living a very traditional existence in a very unique way. I also am a huge fan of the outward show of love she displays for her husband – it is so common for women to talk about what men aren’t doing; Kenya takes time to say be uber supportive of her hubby. She’s the hip, cool type of wife and mother (she gave birth some beautiful babies!) that makes me consider EVENTUALLY becoming a mother (eventually not any time soon!). Take a second to get to know Kenya Afumi Lewis – see what she makes you wanna do!

AS A CHILD WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP: AN ACTRESS. I WAS ALWAYS REENACTING SOMETHING I SAW ON TELEVISION. I’VE ALWAYS HAD A VERY VIVID IMAGINATION. I’M STILL PRETTY ANIMATED, OR SO I HEAR.
DO YOU LOVE WHAT YOU DO: YES. I’VE ALWAYS KNOWN I WANTED TO STAY HOME WITH MY CHILDREN. I REALLY ENJOY WATCHING THEM GROW. I ACTUALLY TAKE PICTURES OF NEARLY EVERYTHING THEY DO AND TRY TO CHRONICLE THEIR YOUTH THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHY. I KNOW THESE MOMENTS ARE FLEETING.
HOW DID YOU BEGIN YOUR CAREER: I STOPPED WORKING FULL-TIME 5 YEARS AGO (JUST BEFORE MY DAUGHTER WAS BORN). AS FOR DESIGN, I’VE ALWAYS BEEN ARTISTIC, BUT IT WAS DIFFICULT TO FIND OUTLETS TO CULTIVATE MY CREATIVE TALENTS INTO MARKETABLE SKILLS. SO SOMEHOW, I CONVINCED MYSELF TO BECOME A NURSE. I STILL WONDER WHAT I WAS THINKING. THANKFULLY, I HAD A REALLY CLOSE FRIEND WHO ENCOURAGED ME TO BECOME MORE AGGRESSIVE ABOUT MY DREAMS. SO, I MOVED TO ATLANTA FOR A MORE AMBITIOUS APPROACH TO LIFE-AN ORDAINED MOVE. SOON AFTER, I ENROLLED IN FASHION DESIGN AND MARKETING CLASSES AT NIGHT WHILE I WORKED FULL-TIME. I’M STILL VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT DESIGN. MY HUSBAND AND I STARTED A T-SHIRT LINE LAST YEAR AND ARE PLANNING TO LAUNCH A CHILDREN’S LINE EARLY NEXT YEAR.
ARE YOU LIVING THE LIFE YOU DREAMED OF: YES. IN SO MANY WAYS. I REALLY LOVE BEING MARRIED. MY HUSBAND IS TRULY A GODSEND. IT’S ENCOURAGING THAT MY DREAMS AND GOALS ARE HIS, AS WELL. HE’S SUCH AN INSPIRATION.
